How To Fill a Vape Cartridge with Distillate

Vaping is one of the most popular and convenient methods for enjoying oil distillates. If you have a supply of distillate, you’re either going to use a dab rig to consume it or a vape cartridge. However, you might be wondering how exactly do you get the distillate in the cartridge in the first place?

No worries, it’s a simple process that doesn’t take very long. Whether you’re someone just looking to fill their own personal cartridges, or you’re looking to mass-produce many cartridges for distribution, we’ll show you the general principles of how it all works.

Lucky for us all, filling vape cartridges is often done by hand or small machines that just about anybody can use. To fill one vape cartridge with distillate you’ll pretty much only need the oil itself, the cartridge, a syringe, and a heat source.

The syringe will be for injecting the distillate into the cartridge reservoir, and the heat source makes the distillate more fluid to make it easier to inject. Most cartridge filler machines act as both a heat source and an injection syringe, and they can make the filling process much faster. But if you’re only filling your own, you probably won’t need one.

Terpenes are special additions you can add to your distillates. They give the concentrate back the aromas and flavors that were lost during the distillate extraction process.

Instructions

1. Unscrew your cartridge to get to the empty tank. Most 510 threaded CCell and Liberty cartridges can be disassembled by twisting the components.

2. Warm your distillate. There are many ways to warm your distillate. How much heat you’ll be using will be dependent on the initial viscosity of your distillate. The whole point of heating your distillate is to get it into a more fluid liquid form.

Don’t go too hot! You can warm your distillate with indirect heat until it becomes easy to take in with your syringe. If you have a cartridge filler machine, you should have the option to adjust the temperature of the oil within. Temperatures of around 100-140 degrees Fahrenheit are most common but will ultimately depend on your distillate.

Once your distillate has reached your desired heat, you can add your terpenes. The amount to add is usually anywhere from 5% to 15% of the amount of distillate you’re using, so a little goes a long way. Your terpenes will affect the viscosity of the oil as well. The more terpenes, the thinner your oil will come out. Stir the mixture to get an even distribution.

3. Once your distillate has been heated to a liquid form, you can extract the oil into your syringe and then inject it into the reservoir of your cartridge. If you’re having a lot of trouble, your oil may not be hot enough yet or not enough terpenes.

If you’re using a cartridge filling machine, you can pour your oil into the device and adjust the shot settings to the specific amount you would like for each cartridge. You can then inject the oil the same way you would with a syringe, but a button will activate the shot instead, and you’ll have the perfect amount.

4. Once your cartridge is filled, you can cap them off with the same plastic caps they come with or seal it with a mouthpiece. We recommend waiting about 12-24 hours to let the oil settle in and soak into the coils. After that, you’re done! You now have a perfectly usable oil distillate cartridge ready for vaping.

What Is THC Distillate and How Is It Different from BHO?

These days we have dozens of different cannabis extracts on the market, but the newest hit is THC distillate which is totally different from BHO and other extracts.

What is THC distillate?

You’ve surely heard of distillation before—distilled water is a good example we can use.

Distilled water is water that gets evaporated and then rapidly cooled, so that it goes back into liquid form. This way the water gets purified.

Before we get into what THC distillate actually is, let’s first go over the definition of distillates in general.

According to Oxford Dictionaries, distillation is “the action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling”, and distillates are liquids that are the end result of this process.

Once you throw THC into that definition, the formula is pretty clear:

THC distillate is a cannabis extract made through short path distillation of cannabis oil, and it can be made from any type of cannabis oil (CO2, BHO, ethanol extract).

High-grade THC distillate is made in laboratories and takes an actual chemist to safely make.

During the process, all impurities and unwanted parts of the plant are removed.

THC distillate is so pure that it doesn’t even contain chlorophyll and it can reach up to 99% cannabinoid content. Impurities such as pesticides and fungi residuals, plant fats and waxes are all removed in the process.

The distillation process involves heating up and cooling explosive liquids, turning CO2 into a supercritical fluid, and several more steps. It’s safe to say that the process is much more complicated than BHO extraction.

In fact, labs that make THC distillates from scratch have fully automated systems that do decarboxylation, winterization, fractionation, and short path distillation one after another.

How is THC distillate different from BHO?

THC distillate is more potent and pure than BHO. Another major difference is in how they are made.

BHO is made through extracting THC from cannabis by using butane, and the end product can come out in various forms and consistencies.

The purest form of BHO is called shatter, and it comes almost always packed in a piece of baking paper. It gets its name for its resemblance to glass, and the manner in which it breaks up.

BHO can reach up to 70% THC, and some claim that after winterization they get an even more pure product at around 80% THC.

However, the purification process can be taken another step further, which is distilling the winterized BHO.

In essence, you can make THC distillate from BHO, but you can’t make BHO from THC distillate.

This type of extract is relatively new to the cannabis industry. THC distillates popped on the scene in the United States around mid-2015, while BHO and CO2 oils have been around for at least 10 years.

Another important piece of information may be that sales of distillate-filled cartridges have been steadily growing ever since their introduction.

Sales of distillate cartridges outgrew sales of other types of extracts in early 2017, according to BDS Analytics.

This isn’t to say that THC distillate is getting more popular than BHO.

In fact, I’d say it’s the other way around as BHO is still generally more popular. THC distillates took over only in this one market related to cartridges.

How to use THC distillate

THC distillate usually comes packed in very small syringes, as they are the easiest tool to both transport and manipulate the extract with.

There are many ways in which THC distillate is being used, however the most common is still dabbing.

Yes. Cannabis is decarboxylated before the process of extraction even starts, which means that by the time you get the distillate, it’s already been decarbed, winterized, extracted, fractionated and distilled.

How to mix THC distillate with vape juice?

Basically, all you need to do is mix your vape juice with the cannabis extract and then apply some heat to them, after which they will blend together.

because I prefer cooking with butter and oil, it gives the food a much richer and smoother taste

people do cook with it but the argument against it is that its too muvh work just to cook with it also it cam be hard tp accurately meter the thc content lf individual portions of many recipes. totally happens but i personally cook with kief in butter myself.

Hi. I bought 2 syringes of thc distillate. Its says dab or edible on package bit can i not put in in my vape pen in the oil chamber ? Ive yried and im getting nothing. Im not sure if im using it right.

If you mean you can’t transfer the distillate onto a coil, into a chamber or into your vape cartridge, warm the syringe in warm or hot water so that the material thins allowing you to work with it. Or roll the container around a lite lightbulb. Seems you can’t even sample your purchase so think “heat” when working with your product (No, not direct flame!).

Just because it’s distillate does not mean it’s activated thc. There’s plenty of distillate available that has 80% thca and like 1%thc. So no, not all distillate is decarbed. Decarboxilation takes time an heat. Short path distillation preserves the acid bond quite nicely.

The effects are completly different.

Use distillate to make butter or oil by heating and mixing and then use in any recipe that takes oil or butter. Imo distillate is the best thing to use. You get the least taste of weed and you can get. Also you can make really strong edibles. Becarefull because sometimes they can get too strong
